The Gettys trace their patrilineal line to Scots‑Irish ancestors from Cullavmor, County Londonderry, in what was then the Kingdom of Ireland.[page:54] Members of the family emigrated to North America, and by the late 19th century George Franklin Getty had become a lawyer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1904, George left law to become an independent oilman, spotting more upside in wildcat drilling than in courtrooms.[page:54] He and his wife Sarah Catherine McPherson Risher had one surviving son, Jean Paul (J. Paul Getty), after losing a daughter in a typhoid epidemic, and George later lent that son money to invest in oil wells, setting the core line of the dynasty on a petroleum track.[page:54]

J. Paul Getty (1892–1976) turned his father’s loans into a fully fledged oil empire and, with George, incorporated Getty Oil in 1916.[page:54] Over his life he married five times and had five sons, creating a sprawling network of heirs that still shapes the Getty name today.[page:54]

With his first wife Jeanette Demont he had George Franklin Getty II (1924–1973); with his second wife Allene Gladys Ashby he had no children; with his third wife Adolphine Helmle he had Jean Ronald Getty (1929–2009); with his fourth wife Ann Rork he had Gordon Peter Getty (born 1933) and Sir Paul Getty (1932–2003); and with his fifth wife Louise Dudley Lynch he had Timothy Christopher Ware Getty (1946–1958).[page:54] The five sons and their descendants form the core strands of the modern Getty family tree.[page:54]

George Franklin Getty II, J. Paul’s eldest son with Jeanette Demont, married Gloria Gordon in 1951 and had three daughters before divorcing in 1967; in 1971 he married Jacqueline Manewal Riordan.[page:54] While not as publicly prominent as some cousins, his line continued the family’s presence in American high society and in disputes over trust structures that reached the Los Angeles Times in the 1980s.[page:54]

Jean Ronald Getty, the son with Adolphine Helmle, married Karin Seibl; their son Christopher Ronald Getty (born 1965) married Pia Miller (now Pia Getty) and had four children, including Isabel Getty (born 1993).[page:54] This branch connects the Gettys into European aristocratic and fashion circles via marriages and social careers more than through direct control of oil assets.

Sir Paul Getty (born Eugene Paul Getty, 1932–2003), J. Paul’s son with Ann Rork, moved to England, took British citizenship and became known as John Paul Getty Jr.[page:54] He married Abigail Harris in 1956 (divorced 1964), married Talitha Pol in 1966 (she died in 1971), and later married Victoria Holdsworth in 1994.[page:54]

With Abigail he had John Paul Getty III (1956–2011), Aileen Getty (born 1959), Mark Getty (born 1960) and Ariadne Getty (born 1962).[page:54] The kidnapping of John Paul Getty III in 1973, for which his ear was famously cut off, turned the family into tabloid material and later inspired films and TV series, while his children Anna, Balthazar and others continued the Hollywood and European cultural connection.[page:54]

Aileen Getty, daughter of Sir Paul and Abigail, married Christopher Wilding, son of Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Wilding, and later married Bartolomeo Ruspoli, son of Italian prince Alessandro Ruspoli.[page:54] She has been active in HIV/AIDS philanthropy, linking Getty wealth to health activism and Hollywood royalty.

Mark Getty founded Getty Images, the stock‑photography giant, and with Domitilla Harding had three children including Alexander Parsifal Getty and Joseph Anselm Getty.[page:54] Ariadne Getty, also a child of Sir Paul and Abigail, married Justin Williams and is mother to Nats Getty and fashion designer August Getty, both of whom are prominent in LGBTQ+ and fashion circles, with Nats marrying YouTuber and model Gigi Gorgeous in 2019.[page:54]

Gordon Peter Getty (born 1933), another son of J. Paul with Ann Rork, married Ann Gilbert in 1964; they had five children together.[page:54] With Ann he raised Gordon Peter Getty Jr. (born 1965), Andrew Rork Getty (1967–2015), John Gilbert Getty (1968–2020) and William Paul Getty (born 1970), among others.[page:54]

In 1999, the San Francisco Chronicle revealed that Gordon also had three daughters with Cynthia Beck, described as a “secret second family,” highlighting how Getty wealth was supporting parallel households.[page:54] His son John Gilbert Getty fathered Ivy Love Getty (born 1994), who became a style figure in San Francisco and married Tobias Engel in a widely covered 2020 wedding before divorcing in 2024.[page:54]

Beyond individuals, the family is now synonymous with a set of Los Angeles institutions: the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Center, the Getty Villa, the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Conservation Institute and the Getty Foundation.[page:54] These entities sit under the umbrella of the J.
